The kikuyu grass has been seeded, the greens have been prepped to the rigorous standards of the USGA and the tickets are long, long gone. That’s right, the U.S. Open has arrived in San Diego. First played in 1895 with a total purse of $335, the hotly anticipated event now finds contenders competing for upwards of $7 million. Being played on a public course for only the second time in history, the championship will attract golf’s top talents to the Torrey Pines Golf Course, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh, along with some 200,000 spectators.
